Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take to fill a bin?

That really depends on how much you cook from scratch and how many people there are in your home. It might take a few weeks to fill but don’t worry as the food is fermenting not rotting it wont smell bad during that time.

Can I really make fertiliser in a few weeks?

This method is 10 times faster than traditional composting which often takes over a year. The fermentation breaks down the food waste so that it turns to fertiliser much more quickly. If you really want fertiliser fast then cutting your food waste into smaller pieces will also help speed things up.

Why is it called Bokashi?

The method was developed in Japan by Professor Teruo Higa in 1980. Bokashi means fermentation or softening in Japanese.

What can I put in my bin?

Any food scraps can go in your bin as long as they’re not already mouldy (mould can kill the micro-organisms in Bokashi). The scraps can be cooked or uncooked, including dairy. If pieces are very large they might take longer to break down. Also don’t include ‘compostable’ bags, cups or cutlery – those are for commercial composters.
