Welcome to Bin Better

Small Bin - Big Impact

Expertise.

Launched in 2025 under the Student Enterprise Programme, Bin Better has developed an affordable and sustainable way for everyone to turn food waste into high quality fertiliser.

What started out as a science project comparing fertilisers (selected for the BT Young Scientist Exhibition 2025) soon became our motivation to get more people upcycling their food waste using a proven fermentation method – Bokashi.

Crafted with Care

Our bins and bran are carefully crafted using local materials to maximise affordability and sustainability

Localitarian – it’s in our Nature!

We source our bins from local restaurants in Bray and make our bran using locally sourced wheat bran. We support the locavore culture in Wicklow by keeping food waste local and turning it into great fertiliser for local growers.

Our Bokashi Bins

By upcycling sauce buckets from local restaurants we’ve made Bokashi bins affordable for everyone to give it a go!

Our Bokashi Bran

We make our Bokashi bran from EM-1, Odlum wheat bran and Molasses. We sell small amounts to get you started. Giving you time to decide if Bokashi is right for you.

Great for soil. Great for plants.

It’s difficult to grow food without fertiliser but commercial chemical fertilisers damage soil and harm ecosystems. They are also transported long distances and have supply chains which can be easily disrupted, risking both affordability and supply.

The Bokashi method can help households and communities produce high quality fertiliser from local food waste. Keeping things local helps the environment in many ways and contributes to food security in challenging times.

Why Bin Better?

Reasons why the Bokashi method is good for the environment and good for you.

Turn your food waste into nutrients for your plants

With traditional composting food breaks down releasing methane (a greenhouse gas) and losing nutrients. Bokashi fermentation keeps the nutrients and adds beneficial microbes that boost your soil and your plants love.

Sounds complicated – really isn’t

Bokashi was developed by Japanese scientist Prof Teruo Higa. Bokashi is the Japanese for ‘fermented organic matter’. Fortunately you don’t need to be a scientist to use it. We’ve made it as simple and affordable as possible.

Local materials – less carbon

We source our materials as close as possible to where you are going to use them. Less carbon from transporting long distances and lower cost for you.

Less waste in your brown bin

If you only have one bin you’ll need to continue to use your brown bin while your food waste ferments (2 weeks) but even with only one bin you can halve the waste going into your brown bin. If everyone did it, imagine the carbon we’d save!

Quick results

Bokashi fermentation makes fertilizer 10 times faster than traditional composting. Start now and you’ll have high-quality fertiliser for the summer.

Everyone can be sustainable

Living in a small apartment, student accommodation or a temporary home? You can still make the most of your food waste with a Bokashi bin. No bad smells. Move and it can move with you.

Hear From Our Customers

Learn from locals trying out Bokashi for the first time.

I’ve just moved into a new apartment so I’m giving it a go. So far it’s easy to use and no smell!

Simon

Thanks to bin better, I’m saving money on my bins.

Claudia

We bought a large bin for Woodbrook College. Now food waste from the home economics class will be used in our polytunnel.
